What am I doing?

Y'all, what am I doing?
The clocked has ticked midnight and it is officially 2014. Most people are heading home, going to bed… but me? I'm typing up my January currently… totally normal right? Hm… don't answer that question! Hah! I was going through my usual pre-bed routine…PJs, teeth brushing, blog checking (yes.. this is part of my pre-bed routine…) when I see that Farley has posted her January currently. Well gosh, I knew I had to get mine posted real quick! Can't be late to the first party of the new year!
Alright…glad I got that done!
Now… it is time for sleep… and LOTS of it!
Happy 2014, y'all!

I have been blessed! (& win a Starbucks gift card!)

Two very simple acts of kindness have been such a huge blessing for me over the past week that I just have to share.
Photo found on several different websites.
It all started last Sunday when I ran through the Starbucks drive through. When I am in any drive through line I am absolutely oblivious to everything around me. I always use the time I am sitting there to clean, organize, look at my phone, etc. HAH! If anyone ever watches me in a drive through line they probably think I am crazy. It is just 5 minutes of time I HATE to waste. Anyways… back to the story. I pulled up to get my drink and the cashier says, "Your drink has been paid for by the person in front of you. Have a nice day." I respond with… "WHAT? I can't believe this. Are you serious? Wow! I can't believe this. What I blessing. I can't believe this."After about a minute of me rambling to the cashier I take off with a HUGE smile on my face and a happy heart. It took me about 3 minutes to go.."CRAP! I should have been a blessing to the person behind me, too." I blame my forgetfulness on the shock I was in. I know things like that happen… but I didn't think they happened to me. I decided then and there to pay it forward sometime in the near future.

Friday morning I pull into the Chick-fil-a drive through and immediately start using my time sitting still to look at my phone and organize. I get to the front of the line and ONCE AGAIN the cashier says, "Your meal has been paid for by the person in front of you." My response, "NO WAY. This is the second time this has happened in ONE week. How in the world? Gosh, people are so nice. Wow."This time I was prepared and "paid it forward" to the person behind me. I only hope that it made them as happy as the people in front of me made me.

This long story is not to brag about how I got my meal paid for twice this week… Hahah, but to tell all of you how BIG a blessing even the smallest "random act of kindness" can be to others. I have witnessed first hand what a small act of kindness can do to a persons attitude and spirit.

This year has been a difficult year for myself and my family and the holidays are going to be the worst part. It is SO incredibly cool how God knows that and sends STRANGERS into our lives to be a blessing when we need a blessing most. These two random acts of kindness have inspired and motivated me to share kindness with others ALL year. It is now my mission to be a blessing like others have been a blessing to me. Even though my mission is to be a blessing… I have learned that when you share with others, you are blessed as well.

Be a blessing this holiday season.
I have learned the impact one person can have on another and because of that, I am living my life in a whole different mindset now. I just wish I could find the two strangers who blessed me this week so I could tell them THANK YOU…
not only for my breakfast…
but for impacting my life.

All of you are also a blessing to me, so I would love to send one of you guys a Starbucks gift card.
All you need to do is comment below one way you have been blessed or one "random act of kindness" you want to do in the future. I can't wait to hear yalls ideas!

Exploring Simple Machines

I don't know about you, but I REALLY enjoy teaching science. I hate that both science and social studies are often forgotten or pushed aside because of the emphasis on math and reading. Even though I do understand the importance of reading and math, I also think science and social studies are important! I enjoy making science units/lessons for my students, so when our textbooks didn't go into too much detail covering simple machines... I started investigating and creating. With the holiday CRAZINESS going on right now, I just created a quick mini-book and assessment activity for my students. I also created some posters to display in our classroom during the unit. I have found some GREAT resources online for making this unit hands-on. Check the bottom of this post for a link to my favorite resource!

Simple Machines Mini-Pack: What will you find in this unit?
This pack is made to be a quick and helpful resource for you to use during your simple machines unit. Pair these activities with several interactive activities that can be found online and your students will be able to identify and classify all 6 simple machines.

- 6 Simple machines posters

-Simple machines mini-book

-Simple machines quick check
Like what you see? Check out this mini-pack on TPT.
This set is on sale for 20% until Sunday so if it looks like something you can use… Grab it now! =)

Edhead's Simple Machine Investigation!

After each type of machine has been discussed, I plan on taking my students to the computer lab to investigate the different type of simple machines using REAL-LIFE examples. Edheads has a great interactive website to use with simple machines. They even provide a worksheet students can complete while they are exploring the website. I cannot wait to introduce this activity to my students next week. I definitely think it will be a hit. I LOVE that students will explore different areas of a house to find real examples of simple machines… Love making those real-life connections. Click the link below to head to the Edhead's website. Make sure to check out their lesson plans and resources.

Y'all have a terrific Saturday!
The 2 week countdown is ON until Christmas Break.

WHERE has 2013 gone? December Currently.

I can't say that I'm sad that 2013 is almost over. It hasn't been the kindest to me or my family. I am ready for a new year. A new start. I also can't believe that the school year is almost halfway over. I am enjoying my time with my current kiddos and I know it will be over before we know it. We have done so many fun things in our little classroom this year. I hope that one day I will have the time to type up some blog posts telling you all about everything.
Those of you that work, have a life, and blog… WOW. I applaud you. I cannot do it. I do vow to try to be better in 2014.

Currentlys are always a fun quick way to catch up with the blogging world.

Two things you need to know about this currently:

1) I am seriously depressed Alabama won't be making a trip to Pasadena this year. It's seriously my favorite place EVER. I am also depressed we lost to Auburn. Can't win them all I guess! RTR anyways.

2)  A complete and total stranger in the car in front of me bought my Starbucks this morning. I have experienced first hand the impact a simple act of kindness can have on a person and for that I am thankful.

Now I'm off to read all of yalls Currentlys. Be back soon. I hope!

Stitch Fix #2 & September Currently

Wowza! What a month. August came and went before I could even think about it. I am throughly enjoying my Labor Day Monday... and I know this short week will be much appreciated. I am loving this school year so far, but this long weekend has been amazing! Since I have been SUPER busy, I am combining two blog posts into one so I make sure I get them both done! Hah! Once the school week starts again, blogging always seems to take a back seat.

I wanted to take some time to share my 2nd Stitch Fix. I am OBSESSED with this company and I am sure you will be to if you get yo' self signed up.

Have any of you heard of Stitch Fix?
Basically it's a fashion website where you have your own personal stylist. You sign up for a "fix" and your personal stylist sends you 5 unique pieces of clothing and accessories based on a detailed style report you fill out. You have three days to check out the clothes, and then you send back (free shipping) the ones you don't want. The only financial commitment is a $20 styling fee that you can put towards any item you purchase.
A while back I got my 2nd stitch fix.
Life has just been TOO busy to post about it until now.
You can check out what I got in my first stitch fix HERE

Okay: Here's what I got in Stitch Fix #2:
1)  A necklace, which was too shiny for me. =( (& I forgot to take a pic.)
2) Super cute geometric top. It had my favorite color in it.. mustard. So I HAD to keep it. I knew it would be a perfect top for work in the fall.
3) Black wrap dress... This dress was cute, but WAY too short.
4) Blue and white polka dot blouse. This top was also super cute, but it isn't really my style. I struggled whether or not to keep it, and eventually decided to send it back.
5) MY FAVORITE.... Gray and orange tank. This tank is amazing and I find myself wearing it all the time. It quickly became on of my favorite summer tops.

Another super-fun thing about Stitch Fix is that now I have seen and tried on these 5 items, I go back to the website and report to my stylist what I thought about each item. This way my stylist can try to make some changes for my next fix.

So, have I convinced you to try it yet? You won't be disappointed!
Go to the Stitch Fix website and sign up. You give them your email and then in the next day or two you will get an invite to sign up. You will fill out your style profile and then you can order your first fix. Give it a one time try or you can sign up for monthly fixes. If you sign up, let me know. I want to see what fabulous fixes you receive! =)

Also, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know. I was not asked to write this review of Stitch fix, I just think it is so much fun. You won't be disappointed! =)

Okay, last but not least, my September Currently!

Love this linky! It's one of my favorites!

Okay, I hope everyone enjoys your Labor Day!
Happy September and Football season. WOOT.

Blogger Exchange: Show us what you got!

Hopefully by now, most of you guys have gotten some fun packages from your exchange partner. If for some reason you haven't, let me know so we can hopefully figure out where your package has gone. =(

Now it's time for you to share with us all of the super cute and totally fun items you received. I am in LOVE with all of my goodies. =)
I was paired with Autumn. What I loved about my box of goodies from Autumn was that she thought BEYOND just school stuff. I got the cutest hair ties and a FABULOUS necklace that I know I am going to get a bunch of wear out of.
I also got some yummy snacks (which I attended to save for my desk at work but may or may not have already been eaten...hah!) and of course some super cute supplies for my room.
(Sorry! I am majorly lacking in the photography skills department!)

Thanks Autumn for all the fun items! I hope you liked your goodies too!
If you haven't checked out Autumn's blog, you need to hop on over there! It's loaded with tons of fun resources! You won't be sorry!

I also have to give a HUGE shout out to Jessica over at Covered in Glitter and Glue. Although my name is on all of the cute buttons and stuff for this exchange, Jessica did ALL (and I mean ALL) of the hard work. She was the "brains" behind the operation and all of you would not have gotten your fun packages without all of Jessica's hard work. Yall need to go check her blog out as well!

Thanks to ALL who participated and don't forget to link up with us! =)

BLAST OFF... into a new school year! (Giveaway Alert!)

Hey guys! Where has summer gone? WOW! I can't believe we are on the 6 day countdown until teacher's return to school in my district. Today I thought I would share one of my favorite, easy back to school craftivities that I have done a few times now. It's a great way to get something fun and cute onto your walls quickly! This was one of my VERY first TPT products, so I have recently given it a facelift. I am updating the pictures in my first post with the updated ones. =)

If you choose to purchase this product, you will now also receive a writing activity that can be used at the end of the year. So, if you don't have time for it at the beginning of the year, save it for those last few days of craziness in May.

I always start the year with the theme:
Third Grade will be a BLAST!

I always complete this fun spaceship craft on the first day of school so we have something fun and colorful up on our walls very quickly! Students create the spaceship and write a short blurb on why they think their new grade will be a blast!

In this download you will find:
-Spaceship tracing templates
-Journal pages for 1st-5th grade

Click HERE to find this creativity on TPT.

This craft has been a huge success for me the past two years. It is simple, easy, and students can do this project pretty independently. This gives me time to wonder the room to talk to different students.

I'd love to give this craftivity to someone who thinks they can use it! Leave me a comment telling me your favorite back to school activity. Now... I'm off to continue enjoying my LAST Wednesday of summer!

Beginning of the Year Math Review FUN!

Hey, Gang! I have posted about these before during the FUN end of the year craziness, but these packs are selling pretty frequently on TPT with school beginning soon as well! In case you missed these the first time, or didn't think about how they could also be used at the beginning of the year, I thought I would share again.

Basically, these are mixed math task cards for 3rd and 4th grade teachers. (There is a pack for 3rd grade and a pack for 4th grade.) Third grade teachers are purchasing a set of mixed math task cards to review key 2nd grade standards with students at the beginning of the year. Fourth grade teachers are purchasing a set of mixed math task cards to review those key 3rd grade standards. I am excited about using these cards because it will be a FUN way for me to do a quick assessment of my new students math skills before we dive in to 3rd grade skills. I hope my students will also enjoy answering these task cards by playing a game of scoot.

Side note: I tried out the 3rd grade review task cards with my previous group of 3rd graders in May and they loved it! It was a great tool to use at the end of the year and it gave me time to go back over the skills I could tell students hadn't totally grasped.

Task Card Details:

Both downloads come with 30 task cards and two different versions of an answer sheet.
You can find all of the details by clicking on the TPT links below.

One more Preview...

HAPPY LAST WEEK OF SUMMER (For me anyways...) Tears!
How do you assess your students at the beginning of the year?
I would LOVE some tips and tricks!

Throwing it Back: Edible Rocks... & Giveaway Winner!

So this week I decided to throw it WAY back... so far back this was one of my first posts. It is still one of my most popular posts thanks to Pinterest. Hah! I made this item for TPT a loooong time ago, but recently renovated it and it looks so much better. I also added some fabulous vocabulary posters.

Anyways... on to the original post.
(I deleted pictures of the original documents and added the new and improved ones! Hah!)

Original Post on  February 8, 2012:
I LOVE science because it gives the students a chance to do hands-on activities.
We just finished up our Rock mini-unit and I wanted to share what we did with you guys.

We began a mini-unit by defining the different types of rocks.
Then, for the next three days we made edible rocks.
My kids LOVED it.
The best part? I really think they learned and know the differences between the rocks now.
I gave them a short assessment to test what they knew yesterday and they all did a great job.

Day 1:
Metamorphic Rocks:
form when rock from inside the earth is heated and squeezed.
Edible Version: To make the edible version we used Starbursts and a plastic bag.

Day 2:
Igneous Rocks:
form when rock from inside the earth cools and hardens
Edible Version: To make the edible version we used two types of chocolate chips (different colors) and a crockpot (representing deep inside the Earth). Once the rocks were melted students scooped some out with a spoon and watched the rock cool and harden.

Day 3:
Sedimentary Rocks:
form when bits of sand and stone are cemented together
Edible Version: To make the edible version we used sugar cookie dough (representing sand), chocolate chips, sprinkles, etc. (representing small pieces of rocks and fossils. Bake the cookie/topping mixture to represent the “rock” being cemented together.

On the final day we munched on our edible sedimentary rocks I baked the night before, and I gave them a short little assessment on rocks. They seemed to understand and I really think my students loved making edible rocks.

Below you will find a link to my TPT store where I posted how to make edible rocks AND the chart I had my kids fill out each day as we learned about each new rock. As we were making each rock I wanted my students to be able to write down the things they were learning.

Find this unit on TPT HERE.
Did you make it to the end? Hah!
Leave a blog post comment telling me your favorite science activity to teach.
I will pick one person to receive this product for free.

Here is an example of the vocabulary posters I have recently added to this product:
In the download you will find one for each of the three types of rocks.
Last but not least, we have a giveaway winner!
Melissa from Fashion Craze Learning Days was the lucky winner.
I will be emailing you shortly Melissa!

I hope everyone has a FABULOUS Thursday!

Also, thanks to First Grade Parade for this FUN linky!

Here are products from my store that you might find useful!

It is a complete two week matter unit... everything you need!
My students LOVED this unit.

I just did a whole blog post on this pack HERE.
This is a pack FULL of character and setting resources for your classroom.

Do you teach the three types of rocks to your kiddos?
This is a fun and editable way students will LOVE.

These task cards are for 3rd and 4th grade teachers. Each pack targets standards that your students should come to you knowing. I plan on using the pack covering 2nd grade standards during the first week of school to assess my students math skills.

This has also been one of my best sellers since I got started a couple years ago. Use this during the back to school season, or save it for New Years or even the end of the year. Templates are included for all three!

Those are just a few of the many different resources I  have available at my TPT store. I have several different task cards, science units, and other literacy block centers. Check them out!

OHH, and better late than never... Amanda from Rock Stars at Work won my Text Features pack.
Sending it her way now! =)
